Beautiful Pretoria
is known as the "Jacaranda City". Visit
the Voortrekker Monument, this large granite edifice
which incorporates a museum, commemorates the
Great Trek. Church Square is dominated by a statue
of Paul Kruger, President of the South African
Republic from 1883 to 1900. The square is surrounded
by fine old buildings, including the Old Raadsaal
(parliament) and the Palace of Justice. The impressive
Union Buildings was designed by Sir Herbert Baker
and completed in 1913. Considered by many to be
the architect's greatest achievement and South
Africa's finest architectural masterpiece. This
was the setting for Nelson Mandela's historic
inauguration on 10 May 1994
